ramping up

prepping some canvases for the DWR craft fair event here in the east bay, as well as doing a few special pieces for olivia's Fabric8 store in san francisco. my desk always becomes a mess this time of year.

piggy in the corner probably for martha's mom

bats and cats for Fabric8

other projects on the horizon: silkscreened apartment posters, t-shirts, holiday cards.

also, i got a haircut by the very talented Tanya Mia. if you want your hair cut in san francisco, you can find her here at the piratesalon. happy holidays, all.

travel journal - new york

flying croc at jae and songyun's stop
31st october
early am flight on a new virgin america plane. took to the skies listening to Duran Duran's Hold Back the Rain. felt very 80's. followed up with david bowie, avro part, radiohead.

in mid-flight, played zelda phantom hourglass on the DS, my reward for working non-stop for the past month. had to shout "hey!" at one point into the microfone (lovely interactive feature) to make a door open. passengers failed to chastise me for geeky behaviour.

landed and could not retrieve the luggage i checked in. filed a claim with a nice lady whose costume was "luggage" made out of a lot of staples and butcher paper. taxi'd over to jane's place in brooklyn.

unloaded substantial amount of crap at the apartment and watched the trick o' treaters from about 5pm to 8pm in the neighborhood. saw a baby poppyseed bagel that was especially cute.

moseyed down smith street and browsed the shops. bought some comics including the Salon by Nick Bertozzi, a new favorite. considered buying a sweater for thien but the brand names are the same as here in the bay area.

met up with jane in the late evening and caught up, ate cold pizza, borrowed a toothbrush etc.

supergrover, by jane
1st november
spent most of this day planning and scheduling. on the phone an awful lot. coordinated schedules with upteen million people.

ran errands bought a Time Out and perused the live venue posts. ordered tickets for a Duran Duran show at the Ethel Barrymore Theater.

hung out at jae's in the upper east side and waited a good part of the afternoon for my lost now found luggage to arrive. forgot to deliver lori's fresh baked cookies from the bay area. still sitting in jane's fridge, go-dammit.

met up with jane back in brooklyn and split a whole roasted chicken at some restaurant with unnecessarily skinny high strung french wait staff. cash only.

near a new elementary school
02 november
went to the wrong location to meet up with sonja, but she found me at any rate. lunched in tribeca, grilled octopus salad, then chatted about books, port authority, and mom brigades at her place.

nice view of the statue of liberty there. only the second time i've seen it though i've been to ny many times now.

visited a mystery specific bookstore and climbed a track ladder to see if they had any robert arthur titles (they didn't). got great cupcakes and pastries at Booley to take back to jane.

met up with shannon, julia, aaron for dinner. shannon lamented about her job search. went to a mexican joint that had margaritas. i opted for a negro modelo. we then met up with another friend and hopped a few bars but none were very satisfactory.

03 november
met up with jae, songyun and their mom for dim sum. all the subways changed routes over the weekend and everyone ended up not quite where they expected to be.

we hopped over to the Oriental Cultural Center and poked around. got some blank notebooks for practicing alphabet writing etc. songyun bought a handmade purse of a fish with another little fish (coin purse) hiding in its belly.

trekked a few blocks down to the dusty old Pearl store to buy acrylic markers of a specific brand. neither the main store or the craft annex had them.

met up back in brooklyn with john and jane for dinner. had some nice brussel sprouts and mashed pumpkin. good primer for the concert.

terrific fun with john at the Duran Duran concert. there were a few old pricks in the audience. one lady got yelled at for standing up and dancing so she left. it all ramped up though, and nobody was sitting by the end of it. D2 is still arty and interesting as ever.

back at the apt. drew some smiling fruit and veggies for jane.

ignored advances made by jp's cabbage patch doll sharlene. watched a plot-involved episode GITS 2nd GIG before going to sleep.

6th street, somewhere thereabouts
04 november
rolled out of bed and took another slightly awkward ride on the F train to see a part of the marathon.

spent the morning with jane and her colleagues. ate a giant brunch feast of homemade turkish food. the swordfish was exceptional. learned how to prepare grape leaves and make dolmas.

walked a little ways down to stephanie's place, now fully rennovated and looking plenty cozy. caught up with her while jane scampered off to queens to buy the very elusive acrylic pens needed for her kitchen mural.

got in the car and drove to the food row where we grabbed fish and chips and tried deep fried macaroni (so good) for the first time. cash only and i didn't have enough.

stayed up late finishing the murals for jane's wall. messed up a little on the carrot - she'll have to do it again. i think it looks generic but otherwise not all that bad.

i fit head to toe underneath that recess
05 november
made it to jae's on the upper east side just before he had to leave for his architectural meeting. washed up and settled in a little, enjoyed a good cup of coffee.

ran into a trailer and gave myself a black eye while on the way to meeting jane and mike for lunch in queens. rather dazed and strange all throughout the thai food, but remember it being tasty. finally becoming interested in food again.

all plans for museum visits and trip to philadelphia are getting nixed due to head bashing incident. spend the early evening nursing the eye.

dinner on west side with john, jae, and songyun at Otto Enoteca. reservations help avoid the long wait. very satisfying bucatini in a red sauce. a hard to find this pasta nowadays.

coming up out of rockefeller center
on the way to kinokuniya bookstore
06 november
dropped by Kinokuniya to pick up another cover. met with mark and discussed ideas for a book. nice to catch up with him, his son now says "elephanty!" came out of there with a lot of new books therefore returned to base to regroup and unwind.

read some books and fell asleep on the couch even though jae's colleague was over helping with architectural renderings. felt a little guilty for crashing out so hard, but it seemed everyone was a bit busy and tired.

met jane in the evening and heard about her day. good news on the horizon for her future work prospects. ate out at an old favorite; she had duck, and i had a satisfying hamburger with frites made just right.

went to AWP in williamsburg somewhere and saw some familiar faces, joan, karen, jon, austin, robin etc. etc. all pretty friendly and sociable people.

aristotle (?) cuckold by a woman at the MET
07 november
spent the day at the MET. really loved the Eternal Ancestors peoples of Central Africa exhibition, though felt a little weird about the fetishist collectors' vibe. too bad this was my only museum day.

bought some ramen at a place called Naruto (couldn't resist) but didn't eat at all.

had enough time to shake the rain off my umbrella and then meet up with songyun, connie at Barneys New York. couldn't really think straight because mark had just called a little before with an offer. stopped by 45RPM my favorite japanese store, but didn't find anything to get for thien.

ate in soho at a little cuban place. met up with jane for dessert in west village but it wasn't so good. had a lot of fun looking at connie's baby shoe designs, what a talent. walked jane to a station, stopped by a bank, then took a cab back uptown.

not all that fond of ny coffee
but drink it anyway

08 november
walked around the reservoir - my only time in the park - to the upper west side. blustery weather. some joggers.

went to see one of jae's projects on 72nd. the crew all frantic due to deadlines. nice detailing on the finishes in the bathroom. left jae instructing the crew where the doorstops were to go.

met up with chris and dave at their office - had lunch together at the sizable in house cafeteria. talked about Avatar, Jason Shiga, and working for Nickelodean. got a tour of the nifty interiors and then headed out to catch a train to Jersey.

had an intense but good meeting with the children's book publishing company, then caught up with kip while on the drive back to the city.

made it back in time for dinner with jae and songyun over at juju and neil's house. ken was there too. finally got to see the new baby Mason. a lot of hair!

09 november
did a little shopping in the am for gifts back at home. malls are mad, i should have never gone.

stopped by Amai tea cookie shop, and got some great cookies. muffins were only okay, texture a little strange.

crazy traffic in a cross town taxi but eventually made it to the airport. flight out was delayed on the ramp, but zelda was plenty fun. had to blow into the mic this time to get rid of "dust".
